Food in Las Vegas is Weird

February 23, 2023

Vegas is a fun time, but I’m happy to be back home in Portland, where there’s better and more diverse cuisine. I don’t know for sure whether I’m spoiled by Portland or that the food scene in Las Vegas is more gimmicky than good. It could be both.

Five items specifically (lobster, wagyu, caviar, foie gras, and black truffle) populate every menu on the strip. While Vegas may come across to some people as an exemplary luxury food location, these items are a warped representation of luxury. Real luxury would indicate some kind of scarcity; however, in Vegas, these items are in abundance.

I don’t doubt that some people love this stuff. I can enjoy some of it too, in extreme moderation. But if you stay in Vegas for more than a day, it becomes trickier every subsequent day to find something to eat that doesn’t resemble something you ate the previous day.

It’s all the same.
